Secure your devices and data while traveling

When traveling, there are many ways data and devices can be compromised. Devices can be lost, stolen, or confiscated at customs. Insecure wifi networks can lead to data loss. UCSF has Travel Safety Guidelines for employees who are traveling. There are additional considerations when traveling internationally, especially to countries of concern.

Directions

  1. For domestic travel, review and implement UCSF's recommended guidelines for travel safety.
  2. For international travel:
    1. Review Office of Ethics and Compliance's guidance for preparing for international travel.
    2. Review how to prepare a Laptop for International Travel.
    3. The U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) maintains a list of current Country Sanctions programs. Contact Export Control if traveling to a sanctioned country as far in advance of travel as possible. Also contract Export Control if you are unsure whether any data or item you intend to travel with might be subject to export control restrictions.
