Use Paper and Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN)

Lab notebooks contain complete records of crucial research information. They ensure that results can be reproduced in the future and that there are traceable records. Both paper and electronic lab notebooks should follow the UCSF Guidance for Electronic and Paper Lab Notebooks. Electronic lab notebooks with sensitive or restricted data (P3 or P4 data) must go through the IT Security Risk Assessment and be approved before you implement and use them.

It is important to remember that lab notebooks are not individual or lab property, but property of the University.

Directions

  1. Follow the UCSF Guidance for Electronic and Paper Lab Notebooks.
  2. Submit a IT Security Risk Assessment request if you plan to use electronic lab notebooks with P3 or P4 data.
