Backing up your data helps protect it from data loss due to accidental file deletion or corruption, hard drive failure, and cyberattacks. Most UCSF pre-approved storage services include automatic backups. If you are managing your own data, there are multiple options you can use to back up and recover your data.
Services
- The UCSF Enterprise Storage backup solution protects your system from data loss by automatically backing up your system to a central, secure storage facility at a specified time each day. This service offers convenient and cost-effective ways to back up and recover your data with differing tiers of recovery time and access depending on your lab’s needs. Different backup tier options and rates can be viewed here.
- External Encrypted Hardware, such as encrypted hard drives and encrypted USB flash drives, can be used to back up your data. The following Recommended External Hardware have been vetted by UCSF IT Security. All UCSF data must be removed (factory reset/erased) from external drives when leaving the university.
- OneDrive Sync automatically backs up a workstation’s Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders. All UCSF staff are provided with an Office 365 account to enable OneDrive Sync. If you have Microsoft OneDrive installed, you can simply log in to OneDrive and begin using OneDrive Sync today to back up your important files. Once you have enabled OneDrive Sync, the designated folders (Desktop, Documents, and Pictures for Windows; Desktop and Documents for Mac) will automatically be redirected to – and synced with – OneDrive. Keep your important documents in these folders for automated backup.
